Police officer in dark uniform sits on a park bench with eyes closed, beside an autumn path and yellow trees.

What It Is

A rapid nervous‑system downshift for moments when you only have seconds, not minutes.

Why It Works

A long exhale signals safety to the brain, reducing unnecessary hypervigilance.

How to Do It

  • Stop. Plant both feet firmly on the ground.

  • One slow breath in through the nose — longer than feels natural. (2 seconds).

  • Exhale through the mouth. Drop your shoulders as you breathe out.

  • (6 seconds).

  • Unclench your jaw.

  • Repeat three times.

When to Use It

  1. walking back to the patrol car

  2. after a tense interaction

  3. before keying up on the radio
